Abstract

Peculiarities of the mode shadow formation in a randomly inhomogeneous oceanic waveguide are studied using vertical radiating and receiving arrays. It is shown that the maximum mode shadow contrast can be reached for optimal parameters of the radiating and receiving arrays if characteristics of the waveguide at the points of location of the source and receiver are known. A decrease in the mode shadow contrast due to scattering of few-mode signals by random inhomogeneities in oceanic waveguides is analyzed.
