Abstract
The standard errors of least squares regression coefficients can be estimated in such a way as to be robust to heteroscedasticity of errors. The possible inefficiency of these robust standard errors is investigated and illustrated. A compromise standard error calculation, based on local smoothing of squared residuals, is also analyzed.
