Abstract

The effect of globalization and industrialization has impacted the construction industry very drastically. The use of more globally acclaimed materials has been observed not only in urban but also in rural parts of India. This has led to a change in the existing characteristics of the built environment. These transformations in the built environment have led to both positive and negative impacts on the environmental and social sustainability of Chhattisgarh. The study focuses on understanding the efficiency of material used in vernacular construction to that of modern in rural areas of Chhattisgarh. The methodology of study involves one to one closed-ended interview, physical observation of the building materials and recording of internal temperatures in three villages of Chhattisgarh. The analysis of the study focuses on the effect of material on the environmental and social sustainability of the region and suggests suitable methods for achieving better sustainability.
