Abstract

This study explores the efficiency changes in the Korean commercial banking industry using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Based on a panel dataset for Korean commercial banks over the period 1991-2012, we find that the efficiency of Korean commercial banks declined sharply during the financial crisis of 1997-1998, but improved in the subsequent bank restructuring period that occurred over 1998-2002, and continued to improve through 2007. We also document that the efficiency of Korean commercial banks has shown a downward trend since the world economic crisis triggered by Lehman Brothers in 2008.
