Abstract

Background/Aims: The gold standard for endoscopic surveillance of Barrett's esophagus includes four quadrant biopsies (4QB) along the visible length of BO. This approach requires a large number of biopsies and is time consuming. In recent years the introduction of high resolution endoscopy (HRE) and acetic acid chromoendoscopy have enhanced visualization of mucosal details and might improve detection of small high grade neoplasias (HGIN) or early Barrett's carcinomas (EC). In a large mixed BO population we investigated the efficiency of these sophisticated imaging techniques for BO surveillance.Design: Prospective comparative studySetting: The study was conducted at a tertiary referral center with a high volume of patients with BO Patients and MethodsFrom January to June 2007 313 consecutive BO patients (mean age 61.4 years; 252 men, 61 women) were enrolled in the study.
