Abstract

With the demand for energy conservation in mind, this paper describes methods to improve the efficiency of Low Voltage Three Phase Squirrel-Cage Induction Motors for General Purpose, used widely in industry and describes the effects of these methods on other characteristics. Characteristics of motors and their costs are influenced by many design elements. This paper describes 25 input elements, put into a computer in order to calculate the design of a motor and 12 variable elements which affect the improvement of efficiency. The 12 elements are valued independently in order to study the effects on efficiency and other characteristics. The results of this study make clear which elements are comparatively effective in improving efficiency. Four design examples of high efficiency motors which combine these effective elements taking into consideration the possible use of magnetic wedges are shown. Then it is pointed out quantitatively that in order to put more effort into improving the efficiency along with compacting its size and lightening its weight as has been pursued up to the present, it is desirable to develop the following technologies.
