Abstract

Aim: Assessing the effectiveness of single level parotidectomy in the primary treatment of parotid pleomorphic adenomas. Material and Methods: The cases that underwent parotidectomy after 2016 due to parotid pleomorphic adenomas confined to the superficial lobe were retrospectively reviewed. Only category 1(upto 3 cm and limited superficial lobe) tumors were included in the study. Tumor size and location, surgical time and procedure, follow-up period and recurrence results were recorded and compared. Results: A total of 43 category 1 parotid pleomorphic adenomas, 22 cases that underwent single level parotidectomy (Group 1) and 21cases that underwent superficial parotidectomy (Group 2), were included in the study. The mean follow-up period was 92(58-104) months in group 1 and 90 (56-100) months in group 2. The mean tumor size was 22.86 mm in group 1 and 24.46 mm in group 2. No recurrence was observed in either of the groups during the follow-up period. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of tumor size, follow-up time andrecurrence. The mean surgical time was significantly lower in group 1(p<0.05). Conclusion:Single Level Parotidectomy is an effective in the treatment of category 1 parotid pleomorphic adenomas and is a minimal parotidectomy method that can be performed for complete removal of the tumor without recurrence.
