Efficacy, safety and acceptability of a new contraceptive vaginal ring delivering nestorone (150ug) and ethinyl estradiol (15ug) daily: results from a multi-center open label phase 3 clinical trial

Abstract

The NES/EE 150/15 CVR is a new, user- controlled, long-acting contraceptive method that can be reused for up to one year. It is inserted into the vagina by the woman, left in place for 21 days and removed for 7 days, for up to 13 cycles. This combined hormonal contraceptive contains NES, a novel non-androgenic progestin, shown to have potent antiovulatory effects at low doses. Steroids released from the CVR are absorbed by vaginal tissues, pass into the general circulation, provide a steady release rate and ultimately inhibit ovulation.
