Abstract
Atherosclerosis is formed due to the accumulation of fibrous tissues in the vascular wall and gradually become thrombus. This will cause blockage of the coronary arteries and can result in casualty. Thus, this study was aimed to investigate the prevention of purple sweet potato antioxidants to the thickening of vascular wall. This research used post-test only controlled group design was applied to white male mice (Rattus norvegicus). Different doses (13.3 mg/day, 26.6 mg/day and 53.3 mg/day) purple sweet potato extract. Significant difference between the control group and the treatment groups was noticed. Purple sweet potato extract had a strong negative correlation with the thickness of the aortic wall (Pearson correlation =-0.817; p = 0.000) and proved to decrease 66.8% the thickness of the aortic wall and could prevent the thickening of the aortic wall in an atherosclerotic rat model.
