Abstract
Oxantel tartrate alone and in combination with the tartrate and citrate salts of pyrantel and morantel were evaluated by employing a series of controlled experiments. Artificial Trichuris suis infections were utilized for these investigations. Dichlorvos and parbendazole were included in some experiments for comparison. The efficacy of oxantel ttartrate in removing T. suis when administered by stomach tube to infected pigs at dose rates from 1.25 to 10.0 mg base/kg was 72.5–100%, respectively; dose rates of 4 and 5 mg base/kg were more than 99% effective. Oxantel tartrate (2.3 mg base/kg) plus morantel tartrate (7.43 mg base/kg) when administered in feed was 90.0–99.9% effective against adult T. suis. Oxantel tartrate plus pyrantel citrate (2.3 mg base/kg + 7.23 mg base/kg) was 93.7%, 91.0% and 100% effective against 16-, 33- and 49-day-old T. suis respectively by in-feed medication. When oxantel tartrate (2.3 mg base/kg) was combined with either morantel tartrate/citrate (7.43 mg base/kg) or pyrantel tartrate/citrate at 7.23 mg or 14.45 mg base/kg, it removed 97.4–100%, 99.3%, 99.2–100%, 93.9–99.0%, respectively, of these parasites.
