Abstract

The ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is the most serious complication of ovarian stimulation. It has been estimated that the incidence of severe OHSS in patients undergoing ovarian stimulation for IVF is about 2% (1). Only supportive rather than curative therapy is available, and there are no clinical characteristics that are completely reliable in predicting OHSS. In addition, none of the strategies aimed at prevention are ideal; at best, they may slightly reduce the incidence of OHSS, but at a high emotional and financial cost.
