Abstract

This paper evaluates three types of fractal-based features according to their ability to segment mosaics of natural textures. Six mosaics constructed from 18 natural textures are segmented by various sets of features including lacunarities and signatures in addition to an estimator of fractal dimension. Fractal dimension alone will not segment all types of natural textures. Fractal features do not always separate natural textures in the same way as would human observer.
