Abstract

Objectives To evaluate the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy(ESWT) in the treatment of peyronie’s disease(PD). Methods PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE for available literatures published before December 2015 were searched. And then the treatment of penile pain, plaque size, deviation angle and intercourse function by ESWT were accessed. Results Eight studies were assessed. Compared ESWT with control for penile pain, the remission rate was higher [OR=3.91, 95%CI(2.11, 7.23)], the pooled odds risk of reduction of plaque volume was [OR=3.18, 95%CI(2.24, 4.51)] in the ESWT group. The number of patients in reducing deviation angle of penis decreased significantly [OR=3.18, 95%CI(2.24, 4.51)]. After treatment by ESWT, intercourse functions of more patients were improved[OR=3.38, 95%CI(1.83, 6.24)]. Conclusions ESWT could alleviate penile pain and reduce or soften PD plaque, decrease the deviation angle of penis and improve the intercourse function.
