Abstract

Introduction: TMJ ankylosis is a condition in which the adhesion of the anatomic joint components results in loss of function of the joint. This affects the patient's speech, ability to receive adequate nutrition and causes severe facial deformity in many cases. Frequently, these patients experience additional pain, oral disease and ultimately, a poor aesthetic profile. Although relatively rare, ankylosis can result from trauma, infection, previous TMJ surgery, congenital deformities or systemic diseases.
