Abstract

Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect and safety of drainage tubes with different calibers in treating pyonephrosis in percutanous nephrostomy. Methods 42 patients from 2007 to 2010 with pyonephrosis and the symptom of fever underwent anti-infection treatment and percutanous nephrostomy. They were divided into two groups:big drainage tube group and small drainage tube group according to the size of pipe diameters, namely F6 and F16 drainage tube. Results Patients in both groups reported relived lumbago and normal body temperature postoperatively. The operation time, postoperative pain grades, times of applying painkillers, duration of increased temperature and leukocyte levels in the two groups were (21.68 ± 5.38) min,(3.61 ± 2.42) points,(0.72 ± 0.71) times,(2.73 ± 2.47) d,(5.22 ± 1.25) d and (12.70 ± 4.64) min,(2.00 ± 1.92) points,(0.26 ± 0.51) times,(4.82 ± 2.09) d,(7.10 ± 1.74) d respectively. Results of comparison between groups were considered significant (P < 0.05).Conclusion Drainage tubes of both calibers prove safe and effective in treating pyonephrosis in percutanousnephrostomy.Relatively speaking, the small drainage tube technique is easy to operate with shorter operation time and fewer pains after surgery, while better effects are observed in big drainage tube group. Key words: Percutanous nephrostomy; Pyonephrosis; Drainage tube caliber
