Abstract
The efficacy and safety of ceftriaxone + netilmicin once daily (group 1) was compared with that of ceftazidime + netilmicin twice daily (group 2) in patients with severe nosocomial infections. In each group of 30 patients, about 70% of pneumonias and 90% of other infections were cured or improved. The response rate for bacteremia was slightly higher in group 1 (5 of 7 patients) than in group 2 (4 of 8 patients). Four of seven patients in group 2 with Staphylococcus aureus infections did not respond to treatment. Both treatment regimens were effective and safe in patients with severe nosocomial infections. However, the once-daily administration is more convenient and less costly.
