Abstract

Hausa has a variety of verb + da + NP constructions where the particle da is usually taken to be either the preposition da meaning 'with', or a dummy syntactic case-marker for the following NP In this paper I identify the particle da in some verb + da + NP sequences with the original efferential suffix -da which, according to Newman (1971, 1983), appears in decausative verbs such as maida 'return (something)', and marks the notion of an action directed away from a discourse-central location. The efferential construction can be given the structure [ v verb + da] + NP, and where da is probably a defective verb. I show that the combination [ v verb + da is possible with verbs from all basic Hausa verb classes and that its syntactic properties distinguish it from verb + [pp da + NP] sequences where da is the preposition da 'with' or a dummy syntactic case-marker.
