Abstract

Effectuation theory has gained prominence as a framework for understanding entrepreneurial decision-making logics. However, the measurement of effectuation remains controversial, as existing measures suffer from important limitations hindering empirical research. Across several empirical studies, we develop a scenario-based measure of effectuation, examine its content validity, explore and then confirm the dimensionality of the measure, and provide evidence of convergent and discriminant validity. Our measure shows evidence of strong reliability and validity. We contribute a new measure for effectuation research that operationalizes effectuation as a decision logic of the individual entrepreneur, clarify the ontological nature of the effectuation construct, and extend its nomological net.
