Abstract

Media effects theories are defined and it is noted that journalism effects theories are a subset. The main concepts and theories that help to explain them include gatekeeping, two‐step flow, selective exposure, knowledge gap, spiral of silence, third‐person effect, agenda setting, priming, framing, news credibility, motivated reasoning, and hostile media.
