Abstract

Objective To compare the periodontal status between patients bonded with buccal tubes and those with bands.Methods Fourty-two patients treated with fixed appliance were divided into two groups:group A (21 patients using bonded molar buccal tubes) and group B (21 patients using molar bands).Plaque index (PLI),bleeding index (BI),probing depth (PD) of the first molars were recorded at 1 week before orthodontic treatment,1 month,3 months and 12 months after placement of orthodontic appliance and 3 months after treatment.The data were compared between the two groups.Results Before treatment,no difference was found in all indexes between the two groups.PLI,BI,PD increased significantly 3 months and 12 months after placement of orthodontic appliance (P<0.05).Significant difference in PD was found 3 months after the treatment between the two groups (P<0.05).Conclusion Bonded buccal tube was more conducive to the periodontal health than molar band.
