Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of zoledronic acid on bone mineral density (BMD) and serum markers of bone metabolism in elderly patients with osteoporosis. Methods The 90 elderly patients with osteoporosis who treated in our hospital were selected from January 2014 to June 2016, they were divided into control group and treatment group randomly, 45 cases in each. The control group were treated with Caltrate D tablets, 600 mg each time, once a day, alendronate, 70 mg each time, once a week. The treatment group were treated with Caltrate D tablets, 600 mg each time, once a day, zoledronic acid 5 mg with 100 ml 0.9% sodium chloride solution in intravenous infusion, infusion time >15 min, once a year. Compared the clinical efficacy, bone mineral density and serum related markers of bone metabolism between the 2 groups. Results The total effective rate of the treatment group was 95.56% [markedly effective in 29 cases (64.44%) and effective in 14 cases (31.11%) respectively], which was significantly higher than that of the control group (80.00%) (P 0.05). After treatment, the bone mineral density of the lumbar spine, femoral neck and femoral trochanter in the treatment group was higher than that in the control group (P 0.05). After treatment, the levels of bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b (TRACP-5b) and collagen type I C-terminal peptide (CTX-I) in the two groups decreased significantly, while the levels of osteocalcin (BGP) increased. Serum markers of bone metabolism level in treatment group were better than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusions Zoledronic acid can significantly improve the bone mineral density of elderly patients with osteoporosis and improve the level of serum related markers of bone metabolism, the clinical efficacy is good, and it is worthy of clinical application.
