Abstract

Summary Biosynthesis of the cell wall in excised radish cotyledons (Raphanus sativus L.) during expansion growth has been studied on a media containing D-[U-14C]glucose. The uptake of D-[U-14C]glucose did not change significantly in the presence of zeatin whereas it was markedly stimulated by fusicoccin (FC). The amount of radioactivity incorporated from D-[U-14C]glucose into the cell-wall polysaccharides was correlated to the expansion growth induced by FC and zeatin-FC treatments. It is suggested that the increased supply of new wall material could be due to either a direct or indirect activation of the membrane-associated polysaccharide synthetases.
