Abstract

Objective To explore the effects of video teaching combined with empowerment theory in functional training of open mouth among traumatic temporomandibular joint ankylosis patients. Methods From April 2015 to April 2017, we selected 60 traumatic temporomandibular joint ankylosis inpatients of Department of Stomatology in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University as subjects. All of the patients were divided into control group and observation group according to odd or even, 30 cases in each group. Patients of control group received the mode of video teaching. On this basis of control group, observation group combined with empowerment theory to provide functional training of open mouth for patients. We evaluated the positivity and pain with the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) and Numerical Rating Scales (NRS) and compared the limitation of open mouth as well as the maximum extent of open mouth before and after intervention among patients in two groups. Results Six months after intervention, the score of PAM of patients in observation group was higher than that in control group; the score of NRS was lower than that in control group; the differences were significant (P 0.05) . The maximum extent of the open mouth of patients in observation group was greater than that in control group with a significant difference (P<0.01) . Conclusions Video teaching combined with empowerment theory can improve positivity and maximum extent of the open mouth of traumatic temporomandibular joint ankylosis patients. It is an effective way to reduce patients'pain.
