Abstract

The effect of vacuum polarization on the response of nuclei to quasi-elastic electron scattering is studied in the random phase approximation (RPA) to a relativistic σ−ω model. The longitudinal response function is modified appreciably, whereas the transverse response is changed little by N-N̄ excitation. Uncertainties in the prediction of response functions in terms of relativistic models are also discussed.
