Abstract

SummaryPigeonpea flowers (Cajanus cajan L. Millsp.) were studied to determine the effects of tripping, with or without the addition of foreign pollen, on flower closure, pod set and seed number per pod. Tripping reduced the time that flowers remained open. Significant increases in pod set after tripping were observed, especially when tripping was followed by inter-varietal pollination. Tripping also increased the average number of seeds per pod from 2.1 to 3.3.
