Abstract

An investigation was made of sialic acid in the thyroid gland. A preparation of calf thyroglobulin which was homogeneous in the ultracentrifuge contained 1.2% sialic acid. Stimulation of the thyroid gland of the rat to cause resorption of colloid was accompanied by a decrease in the thyroidal sialic acid concentration. After feeding thiouracil for 2 days, the time when the rate of decrease of the sialic acid concentration was maximal, there was a doubling of the concentration of free sialic acid in the thyroid. The sialic acid was identified to be N-acetylneuraminic acid.
