Abstract
Therapist termination, a frequent occurrence in training settings, represents a crucial issue within the realm of group process, and is a difficult experience for members and therapists alike. The entire group is thrust into a state of turmoil, painful feelings are evoked, and transference–countertransference issues related to separation and loss emerge. Predictable stages occur during therapist termination, each with its own set of phenomena. Based on a review of twelve therapist terminations over a six-year period in two ongoing dynamic outpatient psychotherapy groups, we have identified the stages, symptoms, and behaviors which typically occur, and have presented appropriate interventions. We have also identified strategies to facilitate the working through of therapists' issues and feelings centering around therapist termination.
