Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Nd:YAG laser irradiation on the pain associated with orthodontic treatment. Two subjects participated in this study with their informed consent to the Nd:YAG laser irradiation test protocol. Case 1: The patient is a 27-year-old male who was worn maxillary lateral expansion appliance. Case 2: The patient is a 22-year-old female with placement of a full edgewise appliance. The gingival areas were coated with Chinese ink and were immediately irradiated with a Nd:YAG laser (Pulse Master, American Dental Technology, Christi, TX) for 30 s at 100 mJ/pulse and 15 pps. After a 30-s interval, the irradiation was repeated once more. The severity of pain was assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for 1 day except sleeping time. In each case, pain relief effects were observed immediately after the irradiation. The effect lasted for 9 h in Case 1 and 12 h in Case 2. This study suggests that the Nd:YAG laser irradiation would be useful for pain relief in orthodontic treatment.
