Abstract
The contribution to the optical potential from the breakup reaction $(\ensuremath{\alpha}{\ensuremath{-}}^{3}$He) in the elastic scattering of 172 MeV $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles from ${}^{62}$Ni is investigated in a phenomenological fashion. A breakup part of the optical potential is introduced and the partial wave amplitudes of this part are compared with published values of the breakup probabilities for this reaction.
