Abstract
Twenty-two patients undergoing ventrolateral (VL) thalamotomy for dyskinesias, mainly parkinsonism, and 16 patients undergoing pulvinotomy for pain were studied before and after surgery with a modified Holtzman Inkblot Technique. Disturbance of verbal or conceptual aspects of complex perception and memory was seen after left VL thalamotomy. Right VL thalamotomy, in turn, seemed to impair direct modes of visual pattern perception and recognition without resulting in deterioration of verbal recall. A decline of verbal recall was noticed after left pulvinotomy, but it did not affect other aspects of the performance. No specific deficits appeared after right pulvinotomy.
