Abstract

Surface roughness can have significant effects on the behavior of a pair of wake vortices approaching to the surface. In this paper, the effects of surface roughness are investigated using numerical simulation. Different types of surface roughness are simulated for both solid, stationary rough surfaces and moving wave surfaces. It has been shown from the results that because of more complicated secondary vortices generated near these rough surfaces than near a smooth surface, wake vortex trajectories and strengths can be significantly altered.
