Abstract
Chlordane caused some apparent increase in the total hemocyte count in treated American cockroaches, Periplaneta americana (L.). Correspondingly, plasmatocytes, granular hemocytes, spherule cells, and cystocytes increased in number. Patterns of transformation of fusiform plasmatocytes into round forms, and cellular degeneration of the 4 types of hemocytes were inconsistent. No granular or cellular debris was observed in the hemolymph of treated cockroaches. In the midgut epithelium, chlordane caused disruption of formation of the peritrophic membrane, increased vacuolization, and accelerated the rates of mitotic and secretory activities in the epithelial cells.
