Abstract

Evoked responses to somatic, visual and auditory stimulation were recorded and interacted in polysensory cortical areas of the chloralose-anesthetized cat. Subcortical structures currently thought to mediate these responses (notably mesencephalic reticular formation, nucleus centrum medianum and midline nuclei) were removed and the recordings repeated. Removal of these structures depressed the responses, but most recovered and interacted in a manner comparable to that observed prior to ablation. It is thus concluded that polysensory cortical convergence, as revealed by interactions, is not dependent upon the hypothesized subcortical projection system. The presence of polysensory responses after ablation was confirmed in unanesthetized cats, but interactions were not performed.
