Abstract

Abstract On four different days stereotyped nonhypnotic, hypnotic (deep), and posthypnotic (deep trance and light) suggestions were given to 10 young male athletes before they took a battery of three tests: hand dynamometer (strength), jump and reach test (power), and supine press of a 47-pound bar bell to exhaustion (endurance). The entire study was then repeated. The only statistically significant improvements found were in endurance when two of the hypnotic conditions were compared with the no hypnosis condition. None of the hypnotic conditions was found to be consistently superior to the others. However, one subject showed enormous increase in endurance when hypnosis was introduced. Gellhorn's explanation of improved physical performance in emotional states is suggested as a possible explanation of such exceptional performance when it is noted in hypnosis.
