Abstract

The study aims to investigate the role of protein-bound, nonprotein and total thiols in metal resistance of Synechocystis isolates exposed to Ni(II), Cr(IV) and Pb(II). Synechocystis sp. BASO403 and BASO404 were investigated with regard to their exposure to 15 ppm Ni(II), 5 ppm Cr(VI) and 100 ppm Pb(II) for metal toxicity and thiol production. Each isolate was effected by metals when compared with controls. Also the role of protein-bound, nonprotein and total thiols in metal resistance of Synechocystis sp. isolates exposed to Ni(II), Cr(IV) and Pb(II) was determined. Synechocystis sp. BASO403 and BASO404 exposed to Cr(VI) produce higher protein-bound thiols when compared with control. In the present study, results showed that thiols might play a role in metal resistance by two Synechocystis sp. isolates.
