Abstract

A computer code has been developed from purely geometric consideration by using spherical flame front assumption which calculates geometric features of the flame front for a cylindrical disc shaped combustion chamber geometry of a spark ignition (SI) engine. By using this code, the probable effects of some combustion chamber design parameters, such as the location of spark plug and the ratio of cylinder radius to clearance height, on combustion duration and heat losses were investigated. It was determined that spark plug should be located as close as to the cylinder axis and combustion chamber must be designed as compact as possible in order to obtain a fast combustion process and reduced heat losses.
