AbstractSpace transport systems often use solid‐fuel in boosters and this type of fuel is also very common for sounding rockets. One of the main components in the exhaust is hydrochloric acid. Photochemical model calculations have been performed to investigate local effects after such a rocket launch. Disturbances of the atmospheric trace gas distribution are possible; however, strong changes in the stratospheric ozone concentration are restricted to altitudes above 30 km and will only occur if the mixing of the exhaust gas with ambient air proceeds slowly.
