Abstract

Hair loss, also known as alopecia can be caused by avariety of factors like hormonal changes, medicalconditions, medications, nutritional deficiency stressand also smoking .The underlying biological mechanismthat may link smoking to hair loss are not yet fullyunderstood, but it is thought that smoking has anegative impact on blood supply to hair follicles.Significant association between smokers having ahigher risk of developing hair loss compared to nonsmokers. Furthermore the study also shows a positivecorrelation between smoking and male pattern baldnesswhich is a common type of hair loss in men. Themanagement and prevention of hair loss fromsmoking require various level of intervention. Individuallevel intervention like abstaining from smoking,increasing awareness among youth regarding theeffects of smoking. Similar recommendations on thecommunity level and country level like bandingcigarettes, taxation of tobacco products, smokingcessation program like camping and nicotinereplacement therapy.
