Abstract

We have investigated the effects of SiNx overcoat on bulk magnetic properties and recording performances in perpendicular media. Difference in recording parameters between disks with SiNx and carbon overcoats is mainly due to the difference in writeability caused by coercivity change during SiNx overcoat deposition. The bulk magnetic properties of the cap in the recording layer are affected by the reaction with silicon and nitrogen. Although SiNx overcoat changes writeability, it does not alter the intrinsic dependence of recording parameters on writeabilty.
