Abstract
The effects of different Fe and Si additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Al–5Cu alloys were studied. The results show that the evolution order of the Fe-rich intermetallic morphology is needle-like β-Fe then Chinese-script Fe-rich intermetallic, and the area size of Chinese-script Fe-rich intermetallic increased from 66 to 1058 μm2 with the increase of Fe addition. It was found that the combined additions of Fe and Si can change the morphology and size of Fe-rich intermetallic, and thus improving mechanical properties. However, the excessive Si addition would cause Si particles to precipitate, and the morphology of Fe-rich intermetallic had a tendency to needled-like. The alloy's solidification path of second phases is α-Fe + Al m Fe→β-Fe→binary eutectic (Al2Cu + Si) in Al–5Cu–XSi–XFe alloys.
