Abstract

Measurements of free surface velocity profiles of high-purity Zrsamples under shock-wave loading are performed to study the dynamicstrength and phase transition parameters. The peak pressure of thecompression waves is within the range from 9 to 14 GPa, and theHugoniot elastic limit is 0.5 GPa. An anomalous structure of shockwaves is observed due to the α−ω phase transition in Zr. Shockpressure has effects on transition pressure which increases withincreasing compression strength, and the stronger shocks have a lowertransit time.
