Abstract

We report our experiment and simulation results of self-phase modulation (SPM) effects on sub-500-fs pulses over the combined standard single-mode fiber and dispersion-compensating fiber transmission link with large broadening and recompression ratio >300. The effects of nonlinearity on postcompensation and precompensation links are different. A dramatic spectral-narrowing effect was observed in the postcompensation scenario. Our results provide more insight about the interaction between SPM effects and fiber dispersions in the femtosecond pulse regime and help to define the power limit for ultrashort-pulse dispersion-compensated links.
