Abstract

This study investigated the effects of screen luminance combination and text color on visual performance for thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) screen characteristics. Results showed that screen luminance combination significantly affected visual performance. In general, visual performance increased with increasing contrast ratio. Screen luminance combination also played an important role on visual performance. Further, there might be interaction effect between screen luminance combination and contrast ratio on visual performance. Higher screen luminance combination (C4H) was slightly better than lower screen luminance combination (C4L) under contrast ratio C4. On the contrary, lower screen luminance combination (C8L) was slightly better than higher screen luminance combination (C8H) under contrast ratio C8. Text color did not differ with respect to visual performance. However, the chromatic texts may be more appropriate than achromatic text on achromatic background for TFT-LCD work. Relevance to industry The TFT-LCD is the most important VDT today. Screen luminance combination and text color are the key factors affecting visual performance for TFT-LCD. The results from this study may improve visual performance for TFT-LCD workers.
