Abstract

Twenty four individually penned lambs (mean weight 24 kg) were offered one of four diets, to investigate the response to a supplement of dietary rumen undegradable nitrogen (UDN) (5.5 and 8.5 g/kg DM) given with roughage: concentrate ratios of 70:30 or 30:70. Diets provided 0.48 MJ metabolizable energy/kg body weight 0.75 per day, and were adjusted according to live weight at weekly intervals. Lambs fed the high-concentrate diets grew significantly ( P<0.01) faster than those fed the high-roughage diet. Supplementation of the high-roughage diet with UDN improved ( P<0.05) daily gain over 70 days and enhanced ( P<0.01) N retention. Apparent digestibility of neutral-detergent fibre was decreased significantly ( P<0.05) by UDN supplementation.
