Abstract

We prepared Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O y (Bi-2212) single crystals by a modified vertical Bridgman method changing temperatures for starting crystal growth ( T s). From the results, we found that the optimum T s for obtaining large Bi-2212 single crystals with good crystallinity should be 975 °C. When the crystal growth was carried out under the optimum conditions, the Bi-2212 single crystal had optimum contents and homogeneous distribution of oxygen and did not include any impurity phases. The Bi-2212 single crystal indicated sharp transition-temperature width of 6 K in susceptibility–temperature characteristic.
