Abstract

In this study, we demonstrate the reduction of forging loads using a rocking motion forging process with four linear actuators. We investigate the effects of the rocking direction on the upsetting load and shape through experiments using aluminum cylinders. The load reduction ratio is not significantly affected by the rocking direction under identical rocking conditions. The oval shape of the transverse cross section that was observed in the case of one-direction rocking changed into a near circular shape when two-direction rocking motion was applied. A positive correlation was confirmed between the load and the contact area reduction ratios, regardless of the rocking direction, even though the shape of contact area was different.
