Abstract

Abstract Human activities represent an important threat to biodiversity. Birds are especially valuable in evaluating environmental monitoring. In this study, we investigated effects of road reconstruction and restoration activities on birds such as Sand martin ( Riparia riparia ) , European bee-eater ( Merops apiaster ) and European roller ( Coracias garrulus ) nesting at roadside in Van, Turkey. To test and control for possible effects, we conducted point-count surveys along the 85 kilometers long highway in Van between years 2013-2015. Our results demonstrated that total population number of these species and nests decreased during and after the road broadening and construction efforts between years 2013-2015 (p<0.05). These three species failed to find alternative nest area affected by habitat destruction caused by road construction works.
