Abstract

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the post-exercise hypotension (PEH) occurrence and response during a four-month period of resistance training, and its relation to the polymorphism of insertion/deletion (I/D) gene expression in hypertensive women aged between 60 and 75 years old. METHODS: The sample consisted of 246 hypertensive women who underwent genotyping. Sixty four were selected and divided into two groups: an experimental group (n = 32; 67.5 ± 7.0 years; 65.4 ± 143 kg; 153 3 ± 5.9 cm, 27.8 ± 5.5 kg/m2; mean BP from 94.9 ± 10.0 mmHg; II=11, ID=9, DD=12) which performed resistance exercise, and a control group (n=32; 66.8 ± 5.4 years, 67.4 ± 12.6 kg, 151.2 ± 6.2 cm, 29.4 ± 4.6 kg/m2; mean BP 93.4 ± 9.5 mmHg; II=10, ID=11, DD=11) without exercise during 16 weeks. The experimental protocol consisted of 3 sets for each exercise, in a total of 10 exercises, for 40 minutes, three times per week in a randomized order, and the following sessions: 1) adaptation to resistance exercise for three weeks (ARE); 2) 1RM tests; 3) resistance exercise at 60% 1RM (RE60%); 4) resistance exercise at 70% 1RM (RE70%); 5) resistance exercise at 80% 1RM (RE80%). Measurements of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were performed for 20 min at rest before exercise (Pre Exerc) and every 15 min during an hour of post-exercise recovery (Rec) (Microlife BP 3AC1-1). Genotyping was performed on all isolates using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). RESULTS: ANCOVA for repeated measures was used to verify the PEH, showing a SBP reduction of approximately 14 mmHg. DBP reduction at rest 3.6 mmHg was observed during the training. An interaction effect was observed only at month 2 between genotype I / D polymorphism and PEH of SBP. At 45 min of the recovery period, SBP was higher in the DD genotype (128.5 ± 13.5 mmHg) than in ID genotype (112.2 ± 14.1 mmHg). At 60 min of recovery, DD genotype (134.8 ± 14.2 mmHg) was different from the ID (118.7 ± 13.3 mmHg). CONCLUSIONS: resistance exercise provoked PEH in hypertensive elderly women, regardless no significant associations between the HPE and genotypes I / D polymorphism.
