Abstract
Inhibition of oxygen consumption in 25- to 27-day-old Muscovy duck embryos ( Cairina moschata) 1, 2 and 4 h after application of recombinant human interleukin-1b (IL-1) was shown. In 29- to 31-day-old embryos an inhibitory effect of IL-1 was not observed. It is assumed that the functioning of the thermoregulatory system in duck embryos in investigated period is insufficient and that the development of physiological regulatory systems in avian embryos might start with non-coordinated and proximately non-adaptive responses; this is supported by the unpredictable effects of IL-1b on oxygen consumption.
