Abstract

Abstract : Investigations were made of the effect of strain rate on the stress vs. strain behavior of two saturated soils. Included are: (a The results and analysis of a series of static triaxial compression tests on a saturated Loess, (b) The results and analysis of a series of rapid triaxial compression tests on a saturated Loess, and (c) The results and analysis of a series of rapid triaxial compression tests on a saturated clay. The static triaxial tests were important in consistently and fully describing the patterns of behavior of the soil during very slowly applied stresses and served as prerequisites to the rapid triaxial tests. The tests performed at rapid rates of strain were of a preliminary nature and the conclusions drawn are to be used in planning a compreh nsive program investigating the effects of strain rate on the stress- strain behavior of saturated soil.
